2. Malcolm X is first talking about the theme of civilian vs authority. He references the people with all the power are generally bad people . Mainly authoritarian people who enforce rules and laws as at the time people like Governor George Wallace of Alabama who is quoted saying "Segregation today, Segregation tomorrow, Segregation forever" .The aspect of bad people having a lot of power according to X comes mainly from people like Wallace who was the governor for 4 terms and even tried to run for president. Wallace avidly disagreed with equal rights for blacks. Malcolm X also touches on peace vs violence. He says he isn't an advocate for violence but believes if it necessary than he isn't against it. He goes as far as justifying the violence as "self defense"

Thank you for your blog post Shaun.
ReplyDeleteYou've done a good job of getting your ideas down. At the same time, please revisit Malcolm X's message as a major theme in this quote is not civilian vs. police. Can you elaborate on how you derived at the message?
I'm not certain how John Carlos and Tommie Smith have anything to do with MLK's or Malcolm X's message. Can you discuss how?
